2nd grade - Abstracted sculptures inspired from some of the greatest works of art

The students and I both had lots of fun with this project.  The students enjoyed doing their own research and self directing a majority of the steps involved.
Here is how the project evolved:
  1. Choosing an artist:  The students choose a biography of an artist that appealed to them to read in class. Next, they choose their favorite artwork by that artist to reproduce on hard cardboard in the medium of their choice.
  2. Elements of art:  We really focused on learning the elements of art so that they could see how their artist made conscious decisions about each element.
  3. Cutting up the artwork:  Then came the hard part.  We cut their artwork in to smaller pieces and reassembled them as you would a puzzle.
  4. Sculpture:  We reviewed the properties of a sculpture before the students took their art reproductions and created their own sculptures focusing on the stability of their structures, areas of interest on all sides and the negative space create around the edges.
