Kindergarten - Unit 2 - Winter birds

Project Focus:  Combining shapes to make a new object, texture and landscape

This project began by a discussion on texture.  The students then used a dry paint brush and black paint to paint scratchy textures on white paper.  Next, they created texture by drawing patterns on paper then painted over it with watercolor paint.  They later used this to create their land and birds.  Next, they learned what a landscape is - a picture of land.  They create the trees from their textured paper and the snowy horizon line by tearing white paper.  Finally, they created their winter birds after being introduced to one of my favorite artist, Charley Harper.  He started off as a graphic designer and it shows in his paintings of birds.  The students could really see how he used geometric shapes to create their birds similar to the way Harper did.

Kindergarten -Unit 2-Polar Express

In kindergarten art, I like to keep reinforcing to the students that all objects can be created by drawing shapes together.  They did this for this project with a little inspiration from one of my all time favorite book and movie during this time of year, The Polar Express.  The students watched a short clip from the movie then set off on creating their own train adventures.

Kindergarten - Unit 2 - Clay Owls

For the next part of the project, the students created an owl using clay.  They learned about the properties of clay and view works of pottery and ceramic sculpture to learn more about the artistic possibilities of the medium. Next, they took what they learned from Part 1 about the shapes and patterns that can be used to draw an owl and used that knowledge to recreate their owl using clay. Once the clay was dried and fired in the kiln, the students painted the owls black and use oil pastels to add color.

Kindergarten -Unit 2- Owls - Part 1

We started this project with a reading of a very sweet book by Tracey Corderoy, The Little White Owl.  The students discussed the book's theme on friendship and accepting the differences in other.  Next, the students studied the shapes and patterns in all the colorful owls found in the book and used this information to create their own using oil pastels.  This was a quick, one day project that helped lead them into the next project, clay owl sculptures.

Kindergarten - Unit 1 - Wild Things

We read Maurice Sendack's Where the Wild Things Are and were inspired by his fantastically creative creatures. The students' discovered the creatures were made by combining geometric shapes and free form shapes together and used this information to create their own "Wild Things".   It amazes me to see how different each student's creature was.
