Fourth Grade - Unit 1 - Haring Sihouettes

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1QatvOaNmZo/TehK4IR4h4I/AAAAAAAAAe0/trE7_X2tdh8/s1600/keith_haring.png

Fourth Grade students started off the year learning about Value by adding in white or black paint to another color.  Next, they learned about an American Artist who started off as a street graffiti artist in New York, Keith Haring.  They had fun drawing each other in different positions to create simple silhouetted figures in motion.

They were also inspired by this video we watched in class of a dance troupe on America's Got Talent.  It helped them understand the concept of a silhouette and gave them additional ideas of how the human body can move.

Third Grade - Unit 1 - Romare Bearden's The Block

This is one of my favorite projects.  The children learn about the life of collage artist Romare Bearden and his work, The Block.  Next, the students will create their own city block by cutting and pasting different papers together. They get to decide what type of buildings will go on their block and even design original cars for their roads.  To end the project, the students name their city and write up an advertisement to convince others to visit.  The students also share their work with their classmates by lining up their city blocks side by side and walk around the room to view their work combined as a larger city.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
that allows the kids to learn more about this work of art and the artist.

Third Grade - Unit 1 - Rousseau

Third graders started off the year learning about the
Elements of Art
line, shape, color, texture, form, value, space.
Then they carefully examined the work of Henri Rousseau to see how he choose to deal with those elements of art within his paintings.  Next, they took on the challenge of creating their own scenes from nature by focusing on the elements of art in a similar way as Rousseau.

Second Grade - Unit 1 - Dessert!

Who doesn't get inspired by Pop Artist, Wayne Theibaud!  His yummy paintings taught us how to draw forms and create value (lightness or darkness) within a work of art.
