Kindergarten - Art Can be Worn!

Our Kindergartners learned a little about the continent of Africa and the art that is made and worn by the Samburu people in Kenya.  They studied the colors and patterns in their necklaces and clothing.  We recreate the necklaces by painting patterns on paper plates the once they dried we used colored sharpies to add more patterns on top.  Then the real fun began when the students created their own salt dough and used it to make beads.  Messy but very fun!  To finish the necklaces we poked holes and used wire to weave on beads onto the plates.

4th Grade Stitched Monsters

4th graders had a blast creating their own monster buddy.  I love the way they all turned out so different.  We used burlap to cut out simple shapes.  The students learned a how to create any type of line they desired with a few simple stitches.  From their they stitched the monsters' faces and then sewed them up.  Awesome job 4th grade!

5th Grade Loom Weaving

1st grade - Native American Woven Pouch

3rd Grade Straw Weaving

3rd grade looked at the history of fiber arts and weaving finding examples in every part of the world. They learned how to weave and used yarn and straws to weave their own bracelet or bookmark.  I like this project because it can be a bit challenging at first but the students quickly master it and feel so accomplished when they have a finished product in the end.

2nd Grade - Warm/Cool Abstract Painting Weavings

In second grade we spent a lot of time this year investigating the color wheel and different color schemes.  For this final project the students created their own abstract painting choosing either a warm or cool color scheme.  We then cut those paintings up and weaved in another solid color.  Finally we glued it to a larger sheet and laminated it to create their own woven place mat.  I hope these mats get some use at the table this summer.

PK - Aliens love underpants

Our Pre-K kids read Claire Freedman's book, Aliens Love Underpants.  This book gave us some great patterns to observe in the Alien's fancy underpants and inspired us to make our own.
